Under-16 Inter-Divisional Camogie Blitz
Well done to Ann Keohane, Aine Walsh, Katie O’ Donovan and Rebecca Murphy who played on the Carrigdhoun side that reached the final of the under-16 Inter-division County Final. They started very strongly in their first match against Seandun, winning 3 points to no score. After a mere ten minute break, they were out on the pitch again, this time playing against Imokilly. The Carrigdhoun forwards found the Imokilly defence difficult to penetrate in the first half, scoring only one point. However, in the second half they had all the play and finished 1-5 to no score.
Due to a strong wind, the final was a game of two halves. After the first 25 minutes Carrigdhoun were leading last year’s winners Avondhu by 7 points and went a further 3 points ahead after a good start to the second half. However, Avondhu then began to take control of mid-field and their superior strength prevented our forwards gaining sufficient possession to score any more. While the girls were extremely disappointed to lose by the narrowest of margins, they can be congratulated on doing their division and their club proud.
Carrigdhoun (0-3) v Seandun (0-0): Aisling Moloney, Courceys (0-1 F) Rebecca Murphy, Ballygarvan (0-2).
Carrigdhoun (1-5) v Imokilly (0-0): Julie Mulcahy, Courceys (0-1), Emma Jordon Ballinhassig (0-3), Rebecca Murphy, Ballygarvan (1-1).
Carrigdhoun (3-5) v Avondhu (3-6): Carrigdhoun scorers: Julie Mulcahy, Aisling Moloney, Courceys (1-0 each), Emma Jordon (0-4,0-2F;0-1,45), Orla Murray, Ballinhassig (1-0), Rebecca Murphy, Ballygarvan (0-1)

By Joe Kennefick: Eire Og 2-6 Ballygarvan: 1-7 Eire Og had a very hard fought two point victory over Ballygarvan in the final of the Evening Echo sponsored Cork County Minor B Camogie Final. Played yesterday at the Camogie grounds in Mahon, a biting wind made this a game of both halves, but at the end, the girls of Eire Og had two points to spare after a thrilling finale. Eire Og led by six points at the interval after playing with a gale force wind, and when Aoife McCarthy goaled early in the second half to put them nine points ahead, they looked the likely winners. However, Ballygarvan dominated the remainder of the game, but could not get the scores they needed. Ballygarvan had the perfect start against the wind and led by 0-2 to 0-0 after three minutes, the scores coming from Rachel Keohane, who could easily have goaled, and a Lorraine Browne free. Eire Og gradually found their feet though, and could have had two goals before Elaine Scally found the net in the seventh minute, after a free from Rosin Murray dropped into the goalmouth. Claire Meaney showed her class, as she hit four points from play, while Scally pointed a free to leave the half time score 1-5 to 0-2 to the girls from Ovens. Ballygarvan, with the wind at their backs were rocked in the 33rd minute when McCarthy goaled. However, they put in a tremendous last twenty minutes. Hard working midfielder Maeve Moynihan, started the recovery with a point in the 36th minute. Lorraine Browne then pointed two frees to narrow the gap to six points. Eire Og were defending desperately at this stage, but in goalkeeper Marie Gleeson and backs Aoife Hennessy and Kattie McCarthy, they repelled attack after attack. Rebecca Murphy thundered into the game, and she goaled in the 51st minute, and had two further points, while Aoife McCarthy replied for Eire Og. With the game in the balance, Ballygarvan threw everything at the winners, but time ran out and Eire Og held on to be champions. Scorers: Eire Og: E Scally 1-1(1f), C Meaney 0-4, A McCarthy 1-1. Ballygarvan: R Murphy1-2, L Browne 0-3(3f), R Keohane 0-1, M Moynihan 0-1. By Joe Kennefick: Ballygarvan 2-8 Glen Rovers 1-4 Ballygarvan had a hard earned, but well deserved victory Glen Rovers in the semi-final of the Cork Minor Camogie championship. Played in arctic like conditions at the splendid Cork Camogie grounds in Mahon on Sunday, Ballygarvan recovered from a poor start to be level at the interval. And when Rachel Keohane struck for her second goal early in the second half, there was no stopping the winners as they pulled away, and they now face Eire Og in the final. Glen Rovers, who were favoured slightly in the opening half, by the strong cross wind, had the perfect start and led by 1-1 to 0-0 after 4 minutes. However Ballygarvan responded well with points from Lorraine Browne and Rebecca Murphy. However, they really rocked the Glen in the 17th minute when Rachel Keohane had the first of her two goals. Glen Rovers responded well and had two points in the 17th and 18th minute to go back in front. Keohane should have had another goal in the 23rd minute, when she gained possession at the edge of the small square, but her point blank shot was brilliantly saved by the Glen keeper. Rebecca Murphy had the final score of the half to leave the half-time score 1-3 apiece. The game changed in the 33rd minute, when Keohane had her second goal after good work by Ashling Byrne. Lorraine Browne pointed three frees to put Ballygarvan into a strong position, before the Glen had their only score of the half in the 44th minute. Glen Rovers really upped the pressure in the last quarter as they tried to claw back the deficit, but the Ballygarvan rearguard were magnificent, as they repelled every advance. Rebecca Murphy and Lorraine closed out the match with a point apiece to leave the final score Ballygarvan 2-8, Glen Rovers 1-4. But while the scorers get a lot of the credit, this was a magnificent team performance from everyone involved, and we wish them all the best in the final. Scorers: Ballygarvan: R Keohane 2-0, L Browne 0-3(4 f, 1 45), R Murphy 0-3. Team: BALLYGARVAN: M E O’Donovan; A Walsh, L O’Callaghan, K O’Donovan; A Keohane, L Browne, L Kennefick; M Moynihan, C Murphy; A Byrne, R Murphy, K O’Sullivan; C O’Sullivan, R Keohane, S Quilligan. Subs; C Keohane for C O’Sullivan(48), R O’Halloran for A Walsh(59), A Murphy for R Murphy(59). Referee. C O’Mahony (St Finbarr’s)
U11'S FINISH SEASON ON A HIGH NOTE Last Sunday saw Ballygarvan's u11 camogie team defeat Tracton in a nail biting Carrigdhoun Final on a score line of 1-2 to 1-0. The game took place in Minane Bridge on a crisp, sunny morning and the Ballygarvan girls were really looking forward to the challenge. They certainly had a challenge on their hands when Tracton opened the scoring halfway through the first half with a goal. Ballygarvan never dropped their heads however and had a number of goal chances which were narrowly missed. Tracton persisted and the Ballygarvan defence held tough and went into half time just one goal down. Refreshed after the break Ballygarvan gave everything they had in the second half and scored two points in quick succession leaving the score 1-0 to 0-2 in favour of Tracton. As time ticked on, it looked like luck was just not on their side as although Bally had much of the possession they could not convert a score. The girls never gave up and were rewarded when a long range ball found the back of the Tracton net. A penalty to Ballygarvan was the last scoring chance of the game but this however was saved and left the final score of a very exciting game at 1-2 to 1-0. The girls are a credit to their club and trainers as all players from the hardworking goalkeeper and defence to the tireless midfielders and diligent forwards tried their best and were duly rewarded. Scorer: Michaella Buckley 1-2.
