Under 16 Inter-Divisional Camogie Blitz

Under-16  Inter-Divisional Camogie Blitz

Well done to Ann Keohane, Aine Walsh, Katie O’ Donovan and Rebecca Murphy who played on the Carrigdhoun side that reached the final of the under-16 Inter-division County Final. They started very strongly in their first  match against Seandun, winning 3 points to no score. After a mere ten minute break, they were out on the pitch again, this time playing against Imokilly. The Carrigdhoun forwards found the Imokilly defence difficult to penetrate in the first half, scoring only one point. However, in the second half they had all the play and finished 1-5 to no score.

Due to a strong wind, the final was a game of two halves. After the first 25 minutes Carrigdhoun were leading last year’s winners Avondhu by 7 points and went a further 3 points ahead after a good start to the second half. However, Avondhu then began to take control of mid-field and their superior strength prevented our forwards gaining sufficient possession to score any more. While the girls were extremely disappointed to lose by the narrowest of margins, they can be congratulated on doing their division and their club proud.

Carrigdhoun (0-3) v Seandun (0-0): Aisling Moloney, Courceys (0-1 F) Rebecca Murphy, Ballygarvan (0-2).

Carrigdhoun (1-5) v Imokilly (0-0): Julie Mulcahy, Courceys (0-1), Emma Jordon Ballinhassig (0-3), Rebecca Murphy, Ballygarvan (1-1).

Carrigdhoun (3-5) v Avondhu (3-6): Carrigdhoun scorers: Julie Mulcahy, Aisling Moloney, Courceys (1-0 each), Emma Jordon (0-4,0-2F;0-1,45), Orla Murray, Ballinhassig (1-0), Rebecca Murphy, Ballygarvan (0-1)

Ballygarvan 2-8 Glen Rovers 1-4: 22nd November 2009

By Joe Kennefick: Ballygarvan 2-8 Glen Rovers 1-4 Ballygarvan had a hard earned, but well deserved victory Glen Rovers in the semi-final of the Cork Minor Camogie championship. Played in arctic like conditions at the splendid Cork Camogie grounds in Mahon on Sunday, Ballygarvan recovered from a poor start to be level at the interval.  And when Rachel Keohane struck for her second goal early in the second half, there was no stopping the winners as they pulled away, and they now face Eire Og in the final. Glen Rovers, who were favoured slightly in the opening half, by the strong cross wind, had the perfect start and led by 1-1 to 0-0 after 4 minutes. However Ballygarvan responded well with points from Lorraine Browne and Rebecca Murphy. However, they really rocked the Glen in the 17th minute when Rachel Keohane had the first of her two goals. Glen Rovers responded well and had two points in the 17th and 18th minute to go back in front. Keohane should have had another goal in the 23rd minute, when she gained possession at the edge of the small square, but her point blank shot was brilliantly saved by the Glen keeper. Rebecca Murphy had the final score of the half to leave the half-time score 1-3 apiece. The game changed in the 33rd minute, when Keohane had her second goal after good work by Ashling Byrne. Lorraine Browne pointed three frees to put Ballygarvan into a strong position, before the Glen had their only score of the half in the 44th minute. Glen Rovers really upped the pressure in the last quarter as they tried to claw back the deficit, but the Ballygarvan rearguard were magnificent, as they repelled every advance. Rebecca Murphy and Lorraine closed out the match with a point apiece to leave the final score Ballygarvan 2-8, Glen Rovers 1-4. But while the scorers get a lot of the credit, this was a magnificent team performance from everyone involved, and we wish them all the best in the final. Scorers: Ballygarvan: R Keohane 2-0, L Browne 0-3(4 f, 1 45), R Murphy 0-3. Team: BALLYGARVAN: M E O’Donovan; A Walsh, L O’Callaghan, K O’Donovan; A Keohane, L Browne, L Kennefick; M Moynihan, C Murphy;  A Byrne, R Murphy, K O’Sullivan; C O’Sullivan, R Keohane, S Quilligan. Juvenile camogie reports

Under 10’s  The U10 girls from Ballygarvan recently took part in the Declan Crowley Blitz hosted by Ballinhassig. Ballygarvan got off to a rocky start being defeated by a strong Ballinhassig side. Things only got better from there as the girls got into their stride and displayed some fantastic heart, determination and skill to defeat Valley Rovers and Barryroe to qualify for the sheild semi final. Ballygarvan were then drawn against Carrigaline, and although having played three games, they never tired and continued to impress earning themselves a well deserved spot in the final against St.Finbarrs. With only twenty minutes seperating them from victory, Ballygarvan pulled out all the stops and ran out winners of this game. From the goal keeper right up to the corner forward, each player put in a huge effort and contributed to a great team performance on the day. Congratulations to all involved and thank you to Ballinhassig for a very enjoyable and well run day.  Panel: Gabie O'Brien, Robyn McAuliffe, Eimear McAndrew, Maya Shears, Isobelle O'Regan, Emma Bateman, Allison Anthony, Rebecca Looney, Sarah Jane Brady, Ellen O' Regan, Sarah Ahern, Emilie LeGrand, Jane Harris   Under 16’s  The under 16’s were drawn against a very strong Brian Dillons team in the County Championship competition. They started well, narrowly missing some goal chances which were saved by the excellent goal keeping of the Dillon’s net minder, who kept a clean sheet until the dying minutes of the game. In the first half they scored a respectable 5 points, but only penetrated the defence on two occasions in the second half. While all the girls worked tirelessly throughout the match and can be proud of the high level of skill demonstrated, it was always going to be an up-hill struggle given that so few of the team were up to the age.  Panel: Katriona Keohane, Katie O’ Donovan, Ann Keohane (1-0), Mary Coveney, Sarah Quilligan, Aine Walsh, Rebecca Murphy (0-4), Lorraine Brown (0-4), Roisin O’ Halloran, Ciara O’Sullivan, Amy Walsh (0-1), Lorna Bateman, Laura Lynch, Lily Dineen, Andrea Murphy, Gemma Downey, Ciara White, Niamh O’Leary.
