Minor Camogie Championship: Ballygarvan 5-10 Mallow 5-5

Minor Camogie Championship

Ballygarvan 5-10 Mallow  5-5

2nd August 2010

The minor team beat Mallow in a very high scoring match, having been down eight points during the first half. Mallow started well, getting 2-1 within the first 7 minutes, to Ballygarvan’s 1 point scored by Lorraine Brown from a 45. After a few strategic changes in position, the girls settled, with points from Rebecca Murphy, Laura O’ Callaghan, Aisling Byrne, Sara Quilligan and Rachel Keohane. However, all their work was negated when Mallow got two quick goals, one from an opportunistic free taken by Mallow’s Katie Buckley. When Ballygarvan were awarded a free just before the short whistle, Lorraine Brown’s low hard shot also found the back of the net, leaving the Ballygarvan girls with a 5 point deficit at 1-6 to 4-2.

Mallow had a good start in the second half, getting a quick point very soon after the resumption of play. However, with the centre field duo of Maeve Moynihan and Christina Murphy fighting hard for every ball and supported by a very strong half back line of Lauren Kennefick, Lorraine Brown and Anne Keohane, Mallow didn’t score again from play until four minutes before the full time whistle. During this period Maeve Moynihan, Sara Quilligan and Rebecca Murphy scored goals and Katie O’Donovan and Rebecca Murphy added another four points to the Ballygarvan toll. In this half, Trojan work from full back, Laura O’ Callaghan and corner backs, Áine Walsh and Mary Coveney conceded just one Mallow goal with four minutes remaining. This led to a very tense few minutes with two points between the sides until Rachel Keohane sealed Mallow’s faith with the tenth goal of the match.

Ballygarvan panel: Mary Ellen O’ Donovan, Áine Walsh, Lauren Kennefick, Mary Coveney, Laura O’ Callaghan (0-1), Lorraine Brown (1-1),  Ann Keohane, Christina Murphy, Maeve Moynihan (1-0), Sarah Quilligan (1-1), Rebecca Murphy (1-4), Katie O’ Donovan (0-1), Aisling Byrne (0-1), Rachel Keohane (1-1), Katriona Keohane, Alison Kelleher

Ballygarvan 0-8 Courcey Rovers 0-9

Senior A Camogie Championship Round 2

The senior team lost to Courcey Rovers in the second round of the championship by the narrowest of margins last Wednesday. Playing against a very strong wind, Ballygarvan found it very hard to get beyond midfield. However, with excellent work from our defence, they conceded only 3 points from play in the first half, while Emmer Dillon (2) and Catriona Kelly (1) got three points for Ballygarvan. Four well-taken frees from Courcey’s Cork Senior player Rachel Moloney left our girls 4 points behind Courcey’s 7 at half time.

Whereas Courceys scored only 2 points from frees in the second half, their defence proved very hard to penetrate. Lorraine Brown opened our second half scoring with a long range free after 10 minutes. Ballygarvan piled on the pressure and Emmer Dillon got her third point of the game, which was closely followed by a point from Aisling Byrne. Catriona Kelly and Lorraine Brown pointed again before the end of normal time.  In the five minutes of extra time the girls fought really hard to get an equaliser and were very unlucky not to be awarded a free on a number of occasions that might have extended their championship campaign.
