Ballygarvan 1-9 Mallow 1-8

Ballygarvan captured the Cork County Minor B Camogie title with a one point victory against Mallow, played in Mahon on Sunday. This was a hard fought win throughout for a young Ballygarvan side, but one in which both sides played a very sporting match which was a credit to trainers on both sides.

The Mallow defence was particularly powerful, but Ballygarvan forwards Sara Quilligan, Rebecca Murphy, Rachel Keohane and Ciara O’ Sullivan kept the pressure on. Their persistence won a number of frees in the first half which were converted to frees by the accurate Lorraine Brown and Maeve Moynihan. Rachel Keohane got an excellent point from play in the 25th minute and Katie O’ Donovan was unlucky not to raise the green flag with a strong shot just wide of the post before half time. However, Ballygarvan led at the short whistle by 0-5 to 0-4 against a physically stronger Mallow side.

Mallow started well in the second half, equalising the score within the first few minutes of play. However, a well taken point from Aisling Byrne, followed by a goal from Rachel Keohane 10 minutes into the second half put the winners in the driving seat. In the second half, goalkeeper Mary Ellen O’ Donovan pulled off two particularly good saves from what seemed to be certain goals and extremely hard work from defenders Laura O’ Callaghan, Áine Walsh, Ann Keohane, Lauren Kennefick and Ciara White kept Mallow scoreless for much of this half. While one of the forwards was injured and had to be carried off the pitch, under-14 player Katrina Keohane ably took her place. Christina Murphy and Aisling Byrne subsequently put over two more points from play, which were followed by a point from Mallow's Katie Buckley. A late Mallow goal by corner forward, Bronagh Ganley left only a point between the teams for a nail-biting last four minutes of the game. However, in a superb team performance during the entire match, Ballygarvan held on for victory.

Team captain Lauren Kennefick accepted the trophy from Marion McCarthy Chairperson of the county board, while Lorraine Browne won the player of the match for her accurate free taking and Trojan work in the full back position.

Senior Camogie news

Senior Team Well done to the Senior team that participated in the recent Pan Celtic festival in Dingle recently. They won their first three matches in the Senior A section to reach the final versus Burgess Duharra, last year’s Tipperary county finalists. They were unfortunate in the final in that one of their most experienced players picked up an injury. Yet the remaining players fought hard and did the club proud.

Ballygarvan 1-01 Douglas 4-12

Ballygarvan were well beaten by Douglas in the 2008 Senior Camogie League Final. Played yesterday at Mahon, Ballygarvan found the handicap of playing minus the injured, Sarah O Donovan, Suzanne Lynch, Mary Ellen O Donovan, and Emer Dillon, who is away, too much to handle. Douglas, who surprisingly won this years championship were much fitter and led at the interval 1-7 to 0-1. At the end it was Douglas 4-12 Ballygarvan 1-1 Scorers: Ballygarvan C Kelly 1-1. Ballygarvan: A Moynihan: M Hallahan, A O Neill, S A O Halloran: D Daly, J Browne, N Hallahan: L Browne, V Browne: A Murphy, C Kelly, K O Sullivan: S Quilligan, C Murphy, M Moynihan.
