Ballincollig Triumph Amid Excitement

Ballincollig 2-6 Ballygarvan 0-6 Ballincollig junior hurlers recently crowned Mid Cork champions, continued on their winning way in Ballygarvan on Sunday last when they fashioned an exciting victory over the home side in the final of the Muskerry/Carrigdhoun league (1987). This new league involving the two divisions was started with a view to providing more attractive competitions for the teams and it can boast of a large degree of success in its first year. Last Sunday's finalists derived maximum benefit from it as they approached every game enthusiastically and patrons who attended the final were certainly treated to a stirring encounter. Ballincollig, having lost the toss for venue were at a disadvantage initially and they also lined out without the services of two of the previous Sunday's victorious team, Seamus O'Brien and Padraig McCarthy who were injured. Ballygarvan were hungry for victory as they wanted to finish the season on a winning note having made an early exit from their own divisional championship and playing with the wind to their backs in the opening half they attacked strongly from the throw-in. They made little headway against the determined Ballincollig defense, however, and the Mid Cork men got an early boost when John Lucey raised a green flag when he put the finishing touches to a long range free from his brother Donal. Donal himself put the winners further ahead in the tenth minute when he scored a point from a free. The fortunes of the Ballygarvan side improved, however, as the second quarter approached and aided by the breeze they were very much on the offensive. Some of their scoring efforts were off target, however, as they were shooting under pressure because of a defense that was giving them little scope. It was inevitable that they should get some scores, however, and they had taken the lead before the interval as they scored five points without reply in the second quarter. Balincollig were still the fancied side at the interval, however, as one felt that the assistance of the breeze would be worth more than a point. They attacked strongly on the resumption and they quickly got on level terms as Donal Leahy, who was now operating at right corner forward, hit over the equalising point. They kept on the offensive but it was now Ballincollig's turn to waste chances and a couple of valuable opportunities went abegging. They slowly moved ahead, however, and points from Charlie Barrett and Donie Leahy raised their hopes. Donie Leahy, who was their leading forward, consolidated their position in the 43rd minute when he confidently cut a sideline ball over the bar. A couple of additional point scoring efforts were subsequently wide of the posts and the winners lived dangerously in the final ten minutes after Barry Kidney had reduced the arrears when he scored a Ballygarvan point. Ballincollig's defense had tightened up completely at that stage, however, as they were not conceding an inch and Kenneth O'Mahony was in top form in goal. The winners continued to give their supporters some anxious moments, however, as they missed about five chances of points, but Brian McCarthy wrapped things for them when he found the net two minutes from time after Denis O'Driscoll had made the opening. Ballincollig increased their lead further in the dying seconds when Pat O'Doherty scored a long range point and he was again set up by Denis O'Driscoll. Ballincollig's stars in last Sunday's victory were in defense where Eugene O'Connor, Donie Hegarty and Frank Daly were particularly impressive. Tom Weste put in an amount of work at centre field and Donie Leahy was their leading forward, receiving most support from Denis O'Driscoll. Ballygarvan's best were Michael Brady, Robert Foster, David O'Sullivan, Barry Kidney and Liam O'Halloran.
