Ballygarvan Triumph in 'B' Final
Ballygarvan 3-6 Ballymartle 1-10 A wonderful comeback which saw substitute Michael Hallahan shoot the winning goal four minutes from time, gave Ballygarvan the South East junior 'B' hurling championship title at the expense of the holders, Ballymartle in an entertaining final played at Ballinspittle on Sunday last. Such a result did not look on the cards at the end of the first half, when after an evenly contested first quarter when the score stood at 0-4 to 0-2 in the winners favour, the holders took what looked like a winning grip, when, thanks to well taken points from Kevin O'Donovan and Finbarr Fitzpatrick together with a Tom Murphy goal in the 17th minute, they edged into a winning groove to lead at the break 1-7 to 0-4. Some Switches Following the resumption the Ballygarvan mentors introduced some substitutions and made some vital switches, all of which gave them greater advantage in the second half. While Ballymartle played with great zeal, their inability to score, except for Kevin O'Donovan's accuracy off frees, cost them dearly. On the other hand, Ballygarvan possessed a goal poacher of rare quality in corner forward Sean O'Halloran who notched two in the 38th and 47th minutes and he got wonderful assistance from the ageless Jerry O'Sullivan, who craftily created the opening. However, Kevin O'Donovan kept the holders in front with a pointed free 1-9 to 2-5 until in the 56th minute, Sean O'Halloran was the manufacturer for substitute Michael Hallahan to hand pass to the net for Ballygarvan's winning goal to which David O'Sullivan added a further point shortly after which kept them deservedly in front until the final whistle. Late Surge All-in-all a rewarding success for Ballygarvan, who in the semi-final against Valley Rovers also came with a late surge and this victory must surely give them further encouragement to complete the South East 'B' double as they will shortly contest the football final. Following the game Mr. Michael Collins, vice-chairman S.E. Board presented the cup to the winning captain Martin Harrington. Scorers: Ballygarvan - S. O'Halloran 2-2; M. Hallahan 1-0; D.
