Ballygarvan in Drawn Junior B Semi-final
Ballygarvan 0-11 Castlelyons 1-8 Power was transferred in this Cork county junior B football semi-final at Carrigtwohill last Sunday, with the sharpness and irregularity of a South American state. Remarkably the fluctuations failed to give us a decision. Castlelyons though could have taken it at the last hurdle. With three minutes to go Ned Kearney was left alone to face Ballygarvan's goalkeeper before being accosted by Ballygarvan's full-back O'Halloran, no doubt feeling a certain responsibility for the nakedness of the cover. Mick Spillane stood up to the penalty with instructions to go for a goal. He struck the kick well but neither wide enough nor low enough to be sure of success and Kidney blocked well, diving to his right. The game was remarkable for the successive dominance and collapse of each team. Ballygarvan led by two points after seven minutes, but trailed by six at half-time. They then scored five times in succession without reply in the first eleven minutes of the second half, but didn't finally equalise until five minutes to go. Ballygarvan's early points came through Liam O'Halloran and Michael Brady, two. Kearney led Castlelyons' emergence with three points by the 12th minute and two further points from Mick Spillane put them 0-5 to 0-3 ahead at the quarter hour.Joe Hartnett pointed before Kearney found the net in the 18th minute. Ballygarvan's Kelly received a short kick-out, was set upon by Kearney and lost possession for the aggressor to score in the corner. John Sheehy pointed for Ballygarvan before Hartnett scored again for Castlelyons to put them 1-7 to 0-4 ahead at the break. Ballygarvan's dominance of the third quarter spread like a tide. Sheehy and Joe Kenefick pointed in the first six minutes. Liam O'Halloran, twice, Keith Kidney and Kenefick did so again in the next six minutes. In between only a pointed free by Spillane had maintained Castlelyons now impoverished lead. Hallahan nearly found the net for Ballygarvan with a fisted effort after 51 minutes but they didn't equalise until four minutes later when the excellent O'Halloran burst through to score.
