U13 Hurling v Valley Rovers

U13 City League hurling match v Valley Rovers on Tuesday 21 April at 7pm. Venue : Ballygarvan. Ballygarvan had an outstanding performance in this game and it was definitely the highlight of the year to date. Ballygarvan had an excellent first half where Richard Cassidy and Colin O Callaghan registered two points while Valley Rovers scored 1-2; with the goal coming from long range free that was deflected over the line. Ballygarvan's goalkeeper Calum O Brien and his defence were heroic in the first half with notable performances from Adam O Leary, Luke O Halloran, Conor O Brien, Robert O Donovan, John Bowen and Colm O Sullivan. Despite the minor set back the players were upbeat at half time and they were determined to continue and build on the great first half display. Andrew French began to upset the Valley Rovers midfield with his tenacious tackling while the forwards tackled like their lives depended on every ball. Great hooks and blocks by Richard Cassidy, Luke Dunlea and Adam Brennan were noted by all in attendance. While the commitment of Dan Begley, Aaron Buckley andd Killian Fitzgerald never wained despite the lack of ball in the second half. Great credit must be extended to all the players who showed great skill, bravery and a 'never say die' attitude in battling against the odds in the second half. Colin O Callaghan scored a point from a free while Killian Fitzgerald scored a super point from play late in the half. Valley Rover's experience, they had 19 U13 players to call upon while Ballygarvan had 9 U13's and 10 U12's, saw them pull away from the battling Garvan's to see them win the game in a comfortable fashion. The Ballygarvan U13 coaches were very proud of their team after the game and they are delighted with the progress to date. The Valley Rovers coaches were also delighted with the competitive game and noted how much Ballygarvan have improved over the last few years. Ballygarvan: Calum O Brien, Adam O Leary, Luke O Halloran, Conor O Brien, Robert O Donovan, John Bowen, Colm O Sullivan, Andrew French, Colin O Callaghan, Richard Cassidy, Aaron Buckley, Luke Dunlea, Adam Brennan, Dan Begley, Killian Fitzgerald, Matthew Anthony, Shane Sexton, Harry Naidoo and Darragh Mannion.

U13 Hurling v Carrigaline

U13 Hurling match v Carrigaline in the City League on Saturday, 4 April 2009 at 4pm. Ballygarvan lost this game despite a great battling performance. Ballygarvan had 13 players on the day due to a number of injuries and holidays while it also clashed with other activities. It was disappointing that Carrigaline started with 15 players despite our request to go 13 a side and the game was very much over as a contest after Carrigaline showed their dominance with a 3 goal and 4 point tally after 10mins. Despite this, the brave Ballygarvan players showed great spirit in the demanding circumstances to battle for the remainder of the game and showed great pride in the Ballygarvan jersey. Credit must go to the parents who ensured that we had 13 players in attendance and hopefully these commited players will go on to improve over the season and hopefully get their reward in later years. Panel: Harry Naidoo, Adam O Leary, Luke O Halloran, Conor O Brien, Colm O Sullivan, Robert O Donovan, Luke Dunlea, Killian Fitzgerald, Adam Brennan, Eugene O Brien, Andrew French (Captain), Dan Begley, Ben Spillane. Absent: John Bowen (holidays), Aaron Buckley (injured), Calum O Brien (holidays), Darragh Mannion, Colin O Callaghan, Richard Cassidy, Shane Sexton, Matthew Anthony. Referee: Donie Harris (Douglas).

South East U 11 Hurling League Final Ballygarvan 3-2 Shamrocks 2-4

Carrigdhoun U11 C Hurling Final Ballygarvan 3-2   Shamrocks 2-4 Ballygarvan Under-11s came out the victors in an epic battle with Shamrocks in Riverstick on Sunday 16th November. Both teams were well prepared and from the first throw in to the final whistle this was an absolute no holds barred thriller. The action was end to end fast exciting hurling with both teams holding each other scoreless for the first 15 minutes. Ballygarvan opened the scoring on 15 minutes when Calum O’Brien’s long puck-out down the right wing found Richard Cassidy’s ha nd. The speedy half-forward worked his way inside his marker and fired the ball to the back of the net from the 45. Shamrocks got the sliotar back up the other end of the pitch and were denied a certain goal only for an excellent save from Calum O’Brien. The shot stopper stretched to the sliotar and turned it onto the woodwork, he then drove the ball down the right wing and Ballygarvan were unlucky not to score again. On the stroke of halftime Ballygarvan conceded a free on their own 45 and Shamrocks pulled a point back to leave the halftime score at 1-0 to 0-1. Shamrocks came out fighting hard in the second half and they drew first blood. The ball dropped into the Ballygarvan square from a free and ended up in the net from the resulting melee. Ballygarvan levelled it again when Richard Cassidy picked the ball on the left hand side and struck a lovely point from an acute angle.  Minutes later Ballygarvan were in front again when they received a 65 to the left of the Shamrocks goal. Killian Fitzgerald lobbed the ball into the square and it passed a forest of hurleys to get to the back of the net. As the half progressed Shamrocks pulled two points back from frees to level the game, and Ballygarvan were on the back foot. A killer blow was dealt to Ballygarvan when a high ball spilled past the fullback line and a Shamrocks attacker ran onto it. Calum O’Brien valiantly saved twice but on the third time of asking the ball hit the back of the net. Bally were a goal down so late in the game and all seemed lost. But Ballygarvans ‘never give up’ attitude shone through and they rallied for the final 5 minutes. Harry Naidoo picked a ball up in the fullback line and soloed up to the half forward line. Shamrocks managed to get the ball out to the right sideline. But Harry’s run had inspired the team and Richard Cassidy took a short sideline to Killian Fitzgerald. Killian cut outside 2 men and made his way along the end line. He fired a rocket shot across the Shamrocks goal and the sliotar was deflected into the goal. The sides were level. Two minutes from time Ballygarvan earned a free on the Shamrocks 65 and Killian Fitzgerald stepped up to blast the winner over the bar. It was a tense couple of minutes until the end but the referee finally blew time and Ballygarvan were victorious. All Ballygarvan players played out of the skins on the day. Calum O’Brien played well on goal making some great saves and good puck-outs. The back line of Matthew Anthony, Conor O’Brien and Harry Naidoo were solid throughout. Captain Luke Dunlea and Shane Sexton shone at half back and Killian Fitzgerald was simply amazing in midfield scoring 2-1. Richard Cassidy had a good game at half forward scoring 1-1. The rest of the forwards battled hard throughout but a good strong Shamrocks defence kept them scoreless. All in all it was a great team performance from Ballygarvan and their never say die attitude stood to them at the end. This win finishes off a good season for Ballygarvan, a season which saw the U11s work hard in matches and training, and finally reap the reward for their efforts. Thanks are due to all players and parents who gave their time and effort to the club this last year. Whether it be helping out at matches or training, putting up goal posts or bag packing, we were never left wanting. Thank you all.
