U16 Hurling SE Champions: Ballygarvan 4-7 Kinsale 2-8 ".............. someone told me there'll be days like this!............"

Ballygarvan won the 2008 South East U.16 Hurling Championship Final before an enthusiastic band of loyal supporters who journeyed to Riverstick and witnessed a grandstand finale. This victory was sculpted from a Herculean team performance.

When everyone is up front and they're not playing tricks.

Ballygarvan 4-7; Kinsale 2-8.

When its not always raining there'll be days like this.

Friday 29th August was one of those days.

When you don't need to worry there'll be days like this.

On this occasion it would be invidious to single out the commanding performances of Emmet Ahern at center back, or the dashing presence of Tim O'Halloran at midfield, the jiving melodies of John and Kieran Quinlan, the predatory intent of Dan McCarthy and Luke O'Sullivan, the stubborn presence of goalkeeper Micheál O Sé, the territorial annexations of full back Gearóid Duntan, or the plundering raid of Stephen Dunne in the dead of time, as the sum of the teams energies, from 1 to 15, culminated in a grand virtuoso performance approaching proportions of the Magnificat.

"When all the parts of the puzzle start to look like they fit Then I must remember there'll be days like this"

This recital of the games finer points is testimony to the enlightened coaching programmes adopted by the clubs games development unit and the under age management committee, oozing class, skill and a work ethic to be admired, cherished and "to die for" - and they did! Their foraging, skilled execution and delivery, was at times spell binding and left the opposition to survive off remnants, thereby limiting their purchase and restricting their profitability. This together with the thumbprints of mentors Pat Quinlan, Eddie O'Sullivan and Mick O'Shea ensured victory was never in doubt.

When no one steps on my dreams there'll be days like this.

And for coach par excellence and All-Ireland medalist Jim O'Halloran, while proving hard graft tempered with skills development reaps reward, having hewed this winning repertoire from delicate embers must bestow a Dawn like moment, a Bolt like epiphany - and deservedly so.

In admiring their Herculean efforts let us be mindful that -

When you ring out the changes of how everything is Well my COACH told me there'll be days like this.

Team captain James Walsh and vice captain Robert Lyons received the trophy from South East Board vice chairman Donal Maguire.

Ballygarvan Team: Micheál O Sé, Michael McAuliffe, Geaóid Duntan, Fergal Ahern, Stephen Dunne (1-0), Emmet Ahern (0-1), Brian Conlon, Phillip Seymour (0-1), Timmy O'Halloran (0-1), Robert Lyons (0-1), Owen Jefferies, Kieran Quinlan, Dan McCarthy, Luke O'Sullivan (1-2), John Quinlan (2-1), Ryan Ashman, Shane Buckley, Stewart Miller, James Walsh.

As we cavalcaded back towards Five Mile Bridge that voice hummed again -

When everything falls into place like the flick of a switch Well my COACH told me there'll be days like this. (With apologies to Van Morrison).

Comhgairdeachas libh go léir.

"Congratulations to our U.16 Hurling champions! Truly deserving of their success. A credit to their families and club. Best regards, Jim, Pat, Eddie, and Mick". - and so the journey continues..........
