U10 Football v Kinsale - Match Report

Under 10 Football Match versus Kinsale away Sunday May 17th 11.30am

Ballygarvan under 10’s headed to Kinsale for their first football match of the season. All the football training we have done early in the year definitely paid off with every single player contributing to an excellent team performance. The Ballygarvan team demonstrated fine skills particularly in team play, catching and attaching the ball.

We got off to the worst possible start conceding a very early goal. This however did not down hearten the team and only served to spur them on. The defence gained complete control for the rest of the match with Goalkeeper Patrick McSweeney commanding his goal area and the full back line of Zackary Kelleher, Michael Cussen and Malcom Crowley snuffing out everything that reach the inside line.

With the midfield of Richard O and Michael O now starting to command the middle area ball was starting to reach the forwards. With their Gooch like movement the inside forward line Ethan Mc Connell, Andrias Lyons and Mark Healy were causing havoc amongst the Kinsale defenders. A well deserved equalising goal was scored by Andrias following by well taken points by Michael O and Mark Healy. Kinsale responded with a point leaving the minimum between the sides at half time.

As the second half began some contenders to Ger Spillane’s title as the best half back in the club began to emerge with the half back line on the day of Adam Dunne, Callum Mackey and Connor Kirby attacking and catching every ball setting off numerous attacks. With the half forward line of Edward Ashman, Paul Sexton and Sam Davidson defended from the front and cutting of all outlets for Kinsale, Ballygarvan controlled the second half. A second goal duly arrived with Richard O Leary pouncing to bulge the net.

To their credit Kinsale never gave up and scored their second goal to leave Ballygarvan 1 point to the good a lead that they held onto to win.

A special thanks to all the parents, it was great to see so many of you supporting the team. Thanks also to Kinsale GAA club, we look forward to seeing them in a few weeks for the return match.

Panel: Patrick McSweeney, Conor Kirby, Michael Cussen, Michael O Sullivan, Zackary Kelleher, Adam Dunne, Richard O Leary, Edward Ashman, Callum Mackey, Paul Sexton, Ethan Mc Connell, Mark Healy, Malcom Crowley, Andrias Lyons, Sam Williamson.

Coaching Team: Eddie Kelleher, Anthony Sexton (ref), Richard Mackey, Andrew Lyons

Cappagh v Ballygarvan - click here to view photo's

Under 9’s and under 10’s Football inter club challenge.

Twenty-two Under 10 and Under 9 players from Cappagh Football Club in County Kildare flew down to Ballygarvan last Saturday 15/11/2008 and were accompanied by 8 of their mentors. Prior to the football games the players visited Douglas cinema to take in the latest James Bond movie.

In all four football matches were played. The Under 10 match was an eagerly contested one with Cappagh proving very strong in the end. The three Under 9 matches were open and fairly contested with Cappagh again emerging the stronger side. The honest effort and spirited display by all the Ballygarvan players was heartening as they fought to contain a Leinster side competing in the upper divisions of Kildare Under 10 football while the Under 9 squad have gone from Div. 5 to Div. 1 in two years. The Cappagh players gave an exhibition in fielding and positional play that was finished off with clinical accuracy in front of goal by David Murphy, Katie O’Connor, Eoin Leonard, Keith McDermot and Thomas Monaghan in the Under 10 match. Ballygarvan scored a fine goal through Jake O’Herlihy. Patrick McSweeney produced heroics in the Bally goal while Michael Cussen, Phelim Mannion and Dylan O’Connor worked tirelessly.

Scores from play by Killian Comerford, Jack Reilly, Mathew English, Oisin O’Cuill, Patrick Jackman, Sean Monaghan and Tomie Martin for Cappagh controlled the Under 9’s game throughout. Richard O’Leary, Michael O’Sullivan, Andreas Lyons and Paul Sexton gave a dogged display in the Ballygarvan defence with Cathal McGreal, Mark Healy, Conor Kirby and Sean Lynch getting on the score sheet.

All games were played in a true sporting fashion and players and mentors from both clubs have to be applauded for this. The post match reception in the Ballygarvan Clubhouse concluded with a special edition medal ceremony presentation to the players to mark their visit to Ballygarvan. Cappagh presented their recently published Club history, written by the grandfather of one of their players to Mick O’Shea, Under Age Chairman.

A post match analysis was reviewed in Bridgies before the Cappagh party were transferred to Cork Airport for their flight home.

U11s South East League Ballygarvan 4-2 vs Valley Rovers 1-2 in Ballygarvan

Ballygarvan kept up their winning streak in the u11s South East League on Monday night beating Valley Rovers 4-2 to 1-2 in a hard fought match under lights at Liam McCarthy park. Ballygarvan opened the scoring after 5 minutes when Jack Seymour doubled on a low ball across the large rectangle, slotting it into the corner of the net. Ballygarvan dominated most of the first half and their next score came from a Killian Fitzgerald 65.The long arcing ball passed a number of players hurleys before finding the back of the net, and Bally were on their way. Ballygarvan’s next goal came from a fantastic solo run by Richard Cassidy. Catching the puck-out from Calum O’Brien on the Valley 45, Richard cut through the heart of the Valley back lines and sent a rocket shot from the 20 to the back of the net. The Ballygarvan back line stood strong in the first half with all 6 backs playing a vital role in keeping Valley Rovers scoreless. Two more points were added by Richard Cassidy and Killian Fitzgerald before the break, leaving the half time score at 3-2 to 0-0. In the second half, Valley Rovers came out battling and gave Ballygarvan a run for their money. This young Valleys team battled hard in the second half and never gave up on the game. They worked hard and it paid off in the second half with a score line of 1-2 to Bally’s 1-0. Calum O’Brien was unlucky not to save a long high ball from the 65 that was lost in the lights and hit the back of the net. The second half was a lot more even than the first half but Ballygarvan’s defenders stood strong again. Adam Brennan, Matthew Anthony and Conor O’Brien battled hard and put in superb performances in the full-back line. Luke Dunlea, Cian Murphy and Shane Sexton put in fantastic performances at half back with all three players covering huge amounts of ground throughout the match. Killian Fitzgerald shone at midfield with Jake Herlihy backing him up well. Captain Harry Naidoo had his hands full with the big full back but battled well and proved more effective when he moved out to the left half forward position. Ballygarvan put the game beyond Valleys 5 minutes from the end when Richard Cassidy gathered the ball on the Valley 20 and made another of his solos across the large rectangle. Richards shot proved unstoppable and Bally led by 4-2 to 1-2. Valley Rovers had a chance minutes later when a rocket shot to the top left corner came from the 20m line. Calum O’Brien in goals stood firm and Bally cleared the ball up the pitch. Calum’s puck-outs were spot on all night, getting great distance and finding Ballygarvan players in space most of the time. The match ended 4-2 to 1-2 with Ballygarvan marching on to play Kinsale in the next round of the league on Sunday the 19th.   The Ballygarvan team on the night were: 1. Calum O’Brien, 2. Croke Park U12 Match reports

On Saturday 4th October 2008 Ballygarvans U12 hurlers made an historic and unforgettable visit to Croke Park. Following in the foot steps of their illustrious clubmen, Jim O’Halloran, Stephen White and All Star, Ger Spillane, the team played on the hallowed Croke Park turf, in a Munster Council sponsored 10 a-side, U 12 hurling festival. The day began at 6am with the team gathering in the club house to make the long journey to Dublin, however the early time did nothing to dampen the spirits of the 23 strong squad. The team were resplendent in their red/white Ballygarvan tracksuit top with initial and surname on the sleeve, and navy initialed tracksuit bottom. On arriving in Croke Park the team was treated to a tour of the GAA museum and a talk on the history of Croke park by museum staff. After a brief rest and a chance to eat their packed lunches, the team were led into the dressing rooms and warm-up area where so many of their sporting heroes have prepared for the big occasion in the past. Following a quick team talk the players were led out onto the pitch for a photo opportunity and the first of three matches. The matches were 10-aside and of 12 minutes in duration. The 'Smart touch' rules were applied to the games, which meant: no soloing and each player took their own free/penalty/sideline. The three opposing teams were Bodyke(Clare), Parteen(Clare), and Ferrybank(Waterford).   Ballygarvan V Bodyke - The first match against Bodyke was tough but went well with Ballygarvan winning on a scoreline of 0-2 to 0-1. The occasion of playing in Croke park was evident in the nervousness of both teams but after a couple of minutes they got into their stride and went on to produce a thrilling game. Ballygarvan struck first with a fine point from Killian Fitzgerald set-up by an accurate puck-out from captain Calum O'Brien in goal. Bodyke levelled it only a minute later but in the dying minutes Colin O'Callaghan put Ballygarvan ahead with a well taken point from the halfway line. In the back line Adam Brennan and Matthew Anthony played well and fought hard throughout. At halfback Luke O'Halloran shone throughout making many timely blocks to deny Bodyke scores and forraged well for the ball. Up front, Shane Sexton and Luke Dunlea fought hard for the ball but were unlucky not to score on a number of occasions. The team was, Goalkeeper: Calum O'Brien(C). Backline: Adam Brennan, Matthew Anthony, Luke O'Halloran. Midfield: Colin O'Callaghan(0-1), Luke Dunlea, Killian Fitzgerald(0-1). Forwards: Darragh Mannion, Dan Begley, Shane Sexton.     Ballygarvan V Parteen – Ballygarvan won their second match on a scoreline of 1-1 to 0-1. In another well fought battle it was Ballygarvan’s defence that made the difference here. Captain John Bowen was a mountain at fullback stopping most of Parteens’ attacks in their tracks with some hard fair hurling. Ballygarvan went ahead with a great point from Richard Cassidy from far out on the right sideline, but Parteen pulled it back with a similar point at the other end. The winning goal came from Richard Cassidy collecting the ball on the 20, driving through the Parteen defence and slotting it home to the back of the net. Ballygarvan were defending for much of the remainder of the match but the defence held out and Adam O’Leary on goal made a couple of well timed interceptions with attackers bearing down on goal. Conor O’Brien played well in midfield giving a good exhibition of all of the skills in hurling. His hooking and blocking were second to none. Harry Naidoo and Ben Spillane foraged well at the front and were both unlucky not to score by the end. The team was: Goalkeeper Adam O’Leary. Backline: Robert O’Donovan, John Bowen(C), Andrew French. Midfield: Conor O’Brien, Colm O’Sullivan, Richard Cassidy(1-1). Forwards: Andrew O’Donovan, Harry Naidoo, Ben Spillane.   Ballygarvan V Ferrybank – This was by far the toughest of Ballygarvans matches. Ferrybank were a big strong team with talented players at all positions. Ferrybank opened the scoring with a point after 3 minutes. This scrappy game was played mostly around the midfield until Shane Sexton earned a free in front of the Ferrybank goal. The jury is out on whether Shane tried for a goal or point from the free, but he confidently stepped up and blazed the sliotar over the bar. Ferrybank pulled ahead minutes later leaving Ballygarvan trailing by a single point. Calum O’Brien made two good saves to deny goals and at the other end Richard Cassidy was very unlucky not to score a goal in a dramatic goal mouth scramble. It was substitute Colin O’Callaghan that saved the day for Ballygarvan with a final minute point from the right side of midfield that saw the sliotar curl just inside the right hand post. Conor O’Brien and John Bowen also shone in this match giving good midfield and fullback performances respectively. It ended all square at 0-2 to 0-2 with all players happy to call it a draw. The game was refereed by Luke O’Sullivan (Ballygarvan U16) who did a great job on the day. The team was: Goalkeeper: Calum O’Brien. Backline: Adam Brennan, John Bowen, Matthew Anthony. Midfield: Luke O’Halloran, Killian Fitzgerald, Conor O’Brien. Forwards: Harry Naidoo Richard Cassidy, Shane Sexton(0-1). Subs: Colin O’Callaghan(0-1), Luke Dunlea, Colm O’Sullivan, Andrew French, Ben Spillane.   Following the matches, the team were back on the bus for the journey home. A stop was made in Supermacs Portloaise for dinner where all players and travelling support were treated to burgers, chips and ice-cream. This made the final leg of the tour all the shorter and the bus arrived back in Ballygarvan for 6pm on the button. All in all, a great day was had by all and it was commented by many clubs that Ballygarvan were the best turned out team on the day thanks to the tracksuits provided by the club. The players themselves were very well behaved and did Ballygarvan GAA proud on the day. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all who contributed their time and money to help this trip become the success that it turned out to be. Thanks are due the parents who travelled with us: Martin Brennan, Brian O’Leary, Denis Fitzgerald, Ger Spillane, and Richard Cassidy.
