Player Injury Scheme 2010

The GAA has operated an injury scheme in one way or another since 1929. Through a process of constant review and frequent improvement the Association continues to exercise concern for the welfare of members involved in our national games in various capacities. The mandatory scheme provides benefits to members playing the national games of Hurling, Gaelic Football, Handball and Rounders whose clubs are registered with the scheme, and also to accredited club personnel performing designated duties in connection with the activities of Clubs registered in the Scheme.

The Injury Scheme is funded entirely from Club and GAA funds with no outside (e.g. insurance) involvement. There is no legal obligation on the GAA to provide such a Scheme.

Risk is an inherent factor in sport, as in life. When members voluntarily take part in Club Activities, they accept the risks that such participation may bring. Legal representation is not required and there is strictly no Legal Expenses Cover amongst the benefits provided.

The Injury Scheme does not seek to compensate fully for injury but to supplement other Schemes such as Personal Accident or Health Insurance. The Scheme only provides cover for unrecoverable losses up to the limit specified under the scheme.

Ultimately, the responsibility to ensure that adequate cover is in place lies with the individual member, commensurate with his/her specific needs.

PLAYER INJURY SCHEME

The GAA Injury Scheme is Administered by Willis Ireland. Willis Ireland is Ireland's leading insurance and re-insurance broker, pensions, actuarial and risk management consultancy.

PLAYERS ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS –

(i) It is a condition of the 2009 scheme that all treatments must be medically prescribed. (ii) To fulfil the terms of the policy, claims must be vouched with the appropriate receipts and medical certificates, processed within the agreed timelines and completed under the approved policy terms. (iii) It is the Claimants responsibility to ensure compliance with the policy terms and conditions.

INJURY NOTIFICATION:

In the first instance, the Claimant must report the injury to the match referee and Club Secretary on the day of the game and have it noted in the match report.

MAKING A CLAIM:

Step 1: To open the Claim with Willis Ireland, the Claimant must complete the 1st two pages of the insurance Claim Form, co-signed by the Club Medical Referee.

Step 2: All injuries must be reported to Willis Ireland, through An Coiste Chontae, within 60 days.

Step 3: The fully completed Claim Form must be submitted through the Club Secretary when the Claimant has all the supporting documentation vouched by the Club Secretary and certified by the Club Medical Referee.

LATE CLAIMS:

The 60 day rule applies. Late claims will be deemed ineligible and will not be processed by Willis Ireland after that period. The Club is not liable in the event of claims default. As with any insurance product, the responsibility for the provision of supporting documentation and the completion of claims on time rests entirely with the individual Claimant.

PRESCRIBED TREATMENTS:

It is a condition of the 2009 scheme that all treatments (section 15.1) must be medically prescribed and carried out by members of a regulatory professional body in line with their qualifications and who have appropriate professional insurance/indemnity.

MEDICAL REFEREE:

Dr. Con Murphy is the Clubs Medical Referee and is the appointed official to manage the rehabilitation of Ballygarvan Hurling and Football Club personnel.
