South East Junior Hurling Final Ballinhassig 4-12 Tracton 4-08 in Ballygarvan

Saturday September 12th @ 6.30pm Cup dedicated to the memory of Con Murphy    By Brian Canty THE cup presented to the winners of the South East junior A hurling champions has been re-named the Con Murphy Cup in honour of the late former President of the GAA. At a special function on Thursday night last in Carrigaline, attended by the head of the Association Christy Cooney and a host of other dignitaries, chairman of the Carrigdhoun division John Twomey said that “naming the cup after Con was a fitting tribute to a man who gave a lifetime of service and dedication to his club and his division.” Mr. Twomey said that Con was a man “of humble origin and humble beginnings who rose up to become head of the greatest association in the country” and that “no matter where he went, he always came back to his roots and it was his honesty and his integrity as a person that made him special. “Con was a great Irishman, a man with true nationalistic values, he was always fair and honest and no matter how high he went, he was looked up to. As a player his record speaks for itself, as an administrator he was unrivalled in how he carried out his business, and as a referee he officiated at club, county and inter-county level. We’ve had great people here in Cork but Con is up there with any one of them after dedicating his life to the ideals and objectives of Cumann Lúthchleas Gael.” Uachtaráin Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Christy Cooney, was equally lavish in his praise: “The respect he (Con) gained throughout the country during his term in office was a testament to the man’s ability.” Throughout Con’s tenure as President, he piloted many significant developments, not least the official opening of Páirc Uí Chaoimh in 1976 but during his three-year term (1976-1979) his biggest achievement was campaigning to the British Army on behalf of Crossmaglen Rangers whose pitch had been occupied by loyalists at the time. “They still talk about Con up there and how he helped them in the challenges they faced,” added the President. Jimmy O’Gorman, chairman of the Munster Council, saluted the Carrigdhoun division for honouring who he called “one of the Rebels finest sons.” “When the history books will be written, the name Con Murphy from Valley Rovers will be in the first chapter,” he added. Also in attendance  were members of the late Con’s family, including his wife Tess and his sons and daughter. Jerry O’Sullivan, chairman of the Cork County Board, and a host of officers were also present as well as the respective captains for this year’s SE junior A hurling championship final, Tadhg Coleman (Ballinhassig) and James Flynn (Tracton).

Intermediate Hurling Playoff Ballygarvan 1-15 Kanturk 3-15 in Castletownroche @7.00pm

Tuesday August 4th  Ballygarvan find themselves in a relegation play off againt Delaney's following a defeat to Kanturk in Clastletownroche.   Ballygarvan were quick on the scoreboard following an excellent point from Alan Murphy after 30 seconds. Ballygarvan found it difficult to cope with the  pace of the Kanturk midfielders and found themselves 2-07 to 0-07 points behind at the break. Mark Kennefick's free's and 65's kept ballygarvan in this as a contest.  With Ger Spillane now dominating the half backline and with surging  runs forward, Ballygarvan began to take control .  Following the introduction Tadgh Quilligan and James Browne this gave Ballygarvan more options in attack.  Three inspirational points from Tadhg Quilligan and a goal from Mattew O Riordan Ballygarvan reduced the deficit to just three points. Kanturk tagged a few late points to run out winners.  Team. P. Murphy, John Spillane, Joe Spillane, Robert Bouse, Derry O Sullivan, C.O'Sullivan, Ger Spillane. M.O'Riordan(1-0), Wm O'Hallaron. James Browne, Tadhg Quilligan (0-3), Alan Butler   O'Riordan saves Kanturk COUNTY IHC RELEGATION PLAY-OFF KANTURK......................3-15 BALLYGARVAN..............1-15   By John Tarrant Thursday August 06 2009 KANTURK produced a gutsy performance to preserve their intermediate hurling status on a thrilling victory over Ballygarvan in a Co. IHC relegation playoff at Castletownroche on Tuesday evening. Better composure under pressure and superior accuracy from distance proved the difference for Kanturk in a typical tense affair yet the contest was rarely less than gripping as both sides tussled to give the attendance full value. Ballygarvan went all out to rescue a game that appeared to be slipping away from them and came within a single score of Kanturk into the closing quarter. But just as it appeared that the momentum might switch to Ballygarvan, Kanturk discovered a new lease of life on the run in and three points without reply sealed the deal. At the full time whistle, the relief was tangible for Kanturk on maintaining their ranking for 2010 while a brave Ballygarvan face a last chance saloon against Delaneys. The loser from that confrontation faces the drop to junior level. At the outset, there wasn't any real pattern to the game yet both sides offered plenty of commitment. Ballygarvan points to Alan Murphy and Cian Ó Conchúir sandwiched likewise points to Kanturk's Aidan Walsh and Anthony Nash. Kanturk proceeded to receive a vital shot in the arm on William Murphy placing Billy O'Keeffe to find the net. That score lifted Kanturk's game no end, the ploy of playing Nash at midfield worked a treat in the opening half, Nash commanding plenty of support from the McLoughlins, Dave Riordan and John Healy. Nash pointed magnificently on the double as did Lorcán McLoughlin from a free to forge Kanturk ahead 1-5 to 0-3. Ballygarvan threatened a revival and though faulty shooting limited progress, Mark Kennefick emerged unerring from frees. However, Ballygarvan incurred a further jolt, conceding a second goal, Kanturk's Murphy and Healy liased for Martin O'Riordan to shoot home from close range and Kanturk enjoyed a promising start to the second half, McLoughlin and Healy on target. Ballygarvan picked up the tempo and pieced their game together, a pair of Kennefick points matched by Garry White and substitute Tom Quilligan. However, the deal appeared to be closed for Ballygarvan on 43 minutes, a long range free from Nash took a deflection off a Ballygarvan defender into the net. However, Ballygarvan were far from a spent force. Under the leadership of Cork footballer Ger Spillane, Ballygarvan rallied surperbly, Derry and Ciaran O'Sullivan along with Joe Spillane and Quilligan effective operators. And Ballygarvan were right back in the hunt once Matthew O'Riordan pounced for a goal. Quilligan answered points from Walsh and McLoughlin to ensure the game remained in the melting pot. Though Ballygarvan laid siege to their opponents goal, the Kanturk defence stood resolute particularly Kieran and Eoghan O'Connor with John McLoughin and Kevin Smith offering steady assistance. But any lingering doubt on the outcome was firmly dispelled in the closing minutes, McLoughlin, Brendan Mullane and Donough Duane nailing down all important points before a relieved Kanturk heard the full-time whistle. - John Tarrant Please note the change of venue.   Castletownroche is about 5 miles beyond Ballyhooly v kanturk 076 v kanturk 072 v kanturk 053 v kanturk 003 v kanturk 026 v kanturk 026 v kanturk 030 v kanturk 031 v kanturk 042

Intermediate Hurling Championship Ballygarvan 0-7 Agahda 1-16 Friday 17th July at Pairc Ui Rinn 6.30pm

Aghada had a deserved victory against Ballygarvan in the intermediate hurling championship game played at Pairc ui Rinn. Ballygarvan playing against a stiff wind in the first half found themselves behind 1-4 to 0-00 after 10 mins. The move of Robert Bouse to corner back and Ger Spillane to mid field helped stem the waves of Aghada attacks. Ballygarvan were 1-11 to 0-2 points behind by halftime. Ballygarvan did out score Aghada in the second half but found it difficult to cope with the power, pace, team play and desire from Aghada. Ballygarvan now must re-group to prepare for a relegation game against Kanturk.

Team: Peter Murphy, John Spillane, Joe Spillane, Ger Spillane, Derry O’Sullivan, Damian O’Sullivan, Ciaran O’Sullivan, Matthew O’Riordan, Robert Bouse, David Bouse, Alan Murphy (0-1), William O’Hallaron,(0-1) Garry White (0-1) Mark Kennefick (0-1, 0-2(f)). James Browne. Subs: William McCarthy, Tadhg Quilligan, Cian O'Conchuir (0-1), Michael Dowd.

O’Keeffe sparkles as Aghada provefar too strong for Ballygarvan Aghada 1-16 Ballygarvan 0-7 By Michael Ellard Saturday, July 18, 2009   A ONE-HORSE race at Páirc Uí Rinn last night as a vastly superior Aghada inflicted a crushing 12-points defeat on Ballygarvan in the Evening Echo Cork IHC second round.   Leading from start to finish, Aghada, with the outstanding Trevor O’Keeffe scoring 1-7, six from frees, ruled the roost and never allowed Ballygarvan a glimmer of hope. Ballygarvan, outclassed in practically every department, were a bitter disappointment and the die was cast for them long before the final whistle. Aghada took maximum advantage of their strong wind assistance in the opening sequences. Trevor O’Keeffe pointed them into the lead after just 15 seconds and the sparkling left corner forward increased his side’s advantage with a pointed free two minutes later. O’Keeffe was on fire as Aghada proceeded to dominate. Centre-forward Eoin Healy powered them three points in front before O’Keeffe hit a blockbuster of a goal in the ninth minute. It was all Aghada as a shell-shocked Ballygarvan side tried disconcertingly to fit the pieces together. Four further points from midfielder Steve O’Keeffe, Trevor O’Keeffe, who converted another free, menacing full-forward Pearse O’Neill and left half forward Vincent Morrissey propelled Aghada into a 1-7 lead after the opening quarter and things looked dire for out-gunned Ballygarvan. With JP O’Connor a commanding presence at full-back for the East Cork side, Ballygarvan rarely got a look in up front and two more successive strikes from frees by Trevor O’Keeffe left 1-9 between them. Midfielder Paudie Wall made it 1-10 before half forward William O’Halloran finally broke Ballygarvan’s duck in the 26th minute. Full forward Mark Kennefick added another but a late strike from right half forward Cian Fleming left it 1-11 to 0-2 in Aghada’s favour at half time. Any semblance of a Ballygarvan comeback after the resumption evaporated when full-forward Mark Kennefick failed to convert a close in free and two pointed frees at the other end from Trevor O’Keeffe sealed the Carrigdhoun side’s dismal fate. Ballygarvan lacked the scoring power and finesse to make a match of it and always allowed Aghada to gain the upper hand. Trailing 1-14 to 0-4 at the end of the third quarter, Ballygarvan did manage to put a look of respectability on the scoreboard with two pointed frees from Kennefick and another from play by corner forward Gary White. But what was a nightmare occasion for them, Ballygarvan failed to score again in the closing stages and a supremely authoritative Aghada side brought the curtain down on their resounding victory with two splendid late scores from Finbarr Day and Vincent Morrissey.
