South East Junior "B" Hurling Final Ballygarvan 2-08 vs Valley Rovers 2-13

In Ballinhassig September 12th @1.00pm

Junior B victory caps a great week for Valleys

By Sarah O' Donovan Saturday September 19th, 2009

Valley Rovers captured their first ever Junior B South East hurling title when they defeated Ballygarvan at sun-drenched Ballinhassig on Saturday last. In what was an entertaining duel both sides enjoyed supremacy for a spell but it was Valley Rovers who took the impetus with a 1-5 haul between the 40th and 45th minutes and it proved too wide a margin for Ballygarvan to claw back despite a resurgence in the closing minutes. John Middleton, in making the post-match presentation, commended both sides on a fast-flowing encounter but felt the “more eager” side deservedly took the plaudits at the final whistle. Valley Rovers captain Edward Newman commended his team on their “sterling commitment” during what was a “long year” and spoke of the “emotion” after the under-14 county final victory over Mallow as proving an “inspiration” to the junior b team in their own battle. Valley Rovers had impressive performers throughout but in particular Keith White’s contribution of 1-4, John Hurley’s imperious performance at full back and the contribution of centre back Terence Cronin, who pointed twice from 70 yards when the need was greatest, did much to bring the title to Innishannon. Equally, Donal Sweeney was a rock at full back for Ballygarvan while Mark O’Callaghan and Killian Manning kept Ballygarvan in the running until the final whistle. Valleys got off to the perfect start with White billowing the net after just 30 seconds after midfielder Robert Moore gave a pinpoint pass and two further points from the crafty corner forward had the Rovers five points to the good. Killian Manning pointed twice from placed balls but Ballygarvan were getting little change from a defence where Cronin, Shane Hallihan and Hurley were marshalling superbly. Ballygarvan were awarded a lifeline on the quarter-hour when referee Anthony Cummins signalled to the penalty spot and goalkeeper Joe Kennefick made the journey to send the ball to the net, changing Ballygarvan fortunes. Ballygarvan tightened up considerably at the back and by the 24th minute the sides were level through a Mark O’Callaghan 65. O’Callaghan contributed much to the game with some sublime frees and equally impressive sideline cuts and will be one to watch in the future as Ballygarvan look to progress in the intermediate grade. Timmy O’Halloran gave Ballygarvan the lead for the first time on 26 minutes but Damien Coughlan’s impressive strike sailed over the bar to level matters immediately. The half-time whistle saw Ballygarvan leading despite Valley Rovers promising start as O’Callaghan again proved unerring from placed balls. White pointed a 65 for Valleys to level matters but an O’Callaghan sideline cut had the Valleys defence in disarray and the side were lucky to concede only a point to Killian Manning after a frantic scramble. With Ballygarvan looking to have gained the impetus, Valley Rovers found another gear as centre-back Terence Cronin took the onus on himself to bring Valleys back in to the contest. Cronin pointed first from his centre back berth to level matters at 1-7 apiece but his second was even more special as his 80 yard drive literally on the sideline sailed between the posts. Valleys could have wrapped it up with a goal in the 42nd minute but a superb save from Kennefick sent the ball out for a 65. Cronin pointed his third free in succession and Valleys grew in confidence, never relinquishing the lead from this juncture. Valleys centre forward Damien Coughlan delivered a probing ball in to the square and a deflection saw it to the net to put Valleys 2-10 to 1-7 clear. All over the pitch Valleys begun to win their individual battles but Ballygarvan were awarded a second penalty to throw a spanner in the premature celebrations. Kennefick made the journey for a second time but this time his effort was saved by full back John Hurley. Ballygarvan looked to have engineered another goal chance in the next exchange but wing back Gearoid Coughlan was on hand to make a crucial interception foiling the plans of Alan Butler. Ballygarvan persevered though and Mark O’Callaghan garnered a goal for his side to leave just a goal between the sides with four minutes remaining when he sent the ball all the way to the net from a 21 yard free. Valleys goalkeeper Mark Crowley, steady all through, was adamant no further goals would be conceded and in the final minutes proved especially diligent. Valleys substitute Ciaran O’Sullivan gifted White a fourth point with his intelligent play before the end and captain Edward Newman further steadied the ship with two points to bring his tally to 0-4 and secure Valleys a five point victory. The final win was just one of three for the progressive club in five days and, with a semi-final still to be played in the IPFC, the year is by no means finished yet. Scorers – Valley Rovers: K White 1-4 (0-1 free, 0-1 65), E Newman 0-4 (0-2 frees), D Coughlan 1-1, T Cronin 0-3 free, S Fitzgerald.
