U 11 S E Hurling League Ballygarvan 5-5 V Shamrocks 1-0

Ballygarvan U11s notched up an impressive win over Shamrocks on Sunday 28th September in Shanbally. All players on the Ballygarvan team played out of their skins in a great exhibition of hurling. Ballygarvan did most of the damage in the first half leading on a scoreline of 2-4 to 0-0 at the break. Most of the scores came from the midfield and half forward line with captain Richard Cassidy and Killian Fitzgerald providing the lions share of the tally. In the second half the score was added to by Michael Cussen and Harry Naidoo. The half back line mopped up everything that came their way with impressive performances by Shane Sexton at half back, Luke Dunlea on his left and Cian Murphy in his right. When called for, Adam Brennan and Matthew Anthony in the full back line were up to the job, and cleared out many a goal mouth scuffle. Calum O'Brien was the man between the sticks and was called into action more in the second half. Calum made a fantastic save from a 20m free on the penalty spot early in the second half to quell the Shamrocks revival, and was unlucky not to keep out a later goal having got his hurley to the sliotar. Jake Herlihy partnered Killian Fitzgerald well in midfield and both provided a good platform for Ballygarvan to mount their attacks. Richard Cassidy scored 3-3 and was a constant threat to the Shamrocks defence. All in all, it turned out to be a good hard hurling contest which was enjoyed by all.

The Ballygarvan team on the day were: 1.Calum O'Brien 2.Matthew Anthony 3.Adam Brennan 4.Leonard Murphy 5.Cian Murphy 6.Shane Sexton 7.Luke Dunlea 8.Killian Fitzgerald(1-1) 9.Jake Herlihy 10.Ben Spillane 11.Richard Cassidy(C)(3-3) 12.Michael Cussen(0-1) 13.Jack Seymour 14.Harry Naidoo(1-0) 15.Andrew O'Donovan 17.Eoin Rasmussen

Mc Grath Cup - Festival of Hurling

Pairc Liam Mac Carthaigh hosted a very successful festival of hurling on Saturday 13th September 2008. 72 boys ranging in ages from 6 to 12 years played out a series of small sided games. The captains of the winning teams were presented with the Mc Grath Cups, which have been kindly donated to the club by Coaching Guru Joe Mc Grath. 40 Under 7 players led by their coaches played a highly entertaining series of games. It was great to see the range of skills displayed by the young and enthusiastic players. Great credit must be extended to the team of coaches who have nurtured these young Garvan's skills for the past 2 years. It was a delight to see the skills of the jab lift, handpass and striking executed so cleanly and with confidence by the children. Cork Senior Hurling Manager, Gerald Mc Carthy was on hand to present each of the 40 Under 7 players with their hard earned medal and also to offer his words of advice. Gerald was delighted to see his Grandson Adam O' Callaghan displaying his hurling skills during the games and continues on the great family tradition of hurling excellence. The Under 8 to Under 12 Blitz saw 32 players compete for the 2 Mc Grath Cups on offer. Each team played three games of 20 minutes duration. These games were refereed by Under 16 Stars Luke O' Sullivan and Emmet Ahern. Again, the effort and skills displayed were highly entertaining for the coaches and parents to witness. The Kilkenny (Yellow) team led by captain Moses Garcio recieved the first of the Mc Grath Cups from local GAA Star Ger Spillane. Kilkenny beat the Kerry (Green) team, led by captain Malcolm Crowley, in a keenly fought final game. The Waterford (Blue) team captained by Seán Lynch and the Armagh (Orange) team captained by Andrias Lyons jointly raised the Mc Grath Cup after an excellent game of hurling that saw both teams finish level on the scoreboard. A party atmosphere was enjoyed after the games when the players enjoyed the treats of juice, crisps and cakes; while parents and coaches had a well earned cup of tea. A special word of thanks must be extended to Gerald Mc Carthy and Ger Spillane for presenting the medals and trophies to the children.  Chairman, Mick O' Shea pointed out to all players and parents present what can be achieved by dedicating oneself to playing hurling and football with Ballygarvan by highlighting the success Ger Spillane has achieved as a result of his dedication and love of Gaelic games that was nurtured by Ballygarvan GAA Club from a young age. The Underage Committee led by Chairman Mick O' Shea, Secretary Betty O' Sullivan and Treasurer Mary Ahern must be commended for organising the team of volunteers who helped both on and off the field by putting up goalposts, making tea, tidying up etc. Finally, thanks to the team of club coaches for their help during the week and on the day for ensuring a great day was had by all. Coaching Team: Barry Mannion, Alan O' Connor, Donncha Kavanagh, Tony O' Brien, Liam O' Halloran, Gary Ronan, Jim O' Halloran, Ray Merchant, Michael O' Sullivan, Eddie Kelleher, Richard Mackey, Andrew Lyons, Sean O' Sullivan, Graham Henderson, Michael Lyons, Anthony Dowd, Owen O' Callaghan, Billy Lynch, Tomas O' Brien, Tim O' Donovan & Francesca O' Halloran.
