IHC relegation playoff at Castletownroche on Tuesday evening. Better composure under pressure and superior accuracy from distance proved the difference for Kanturk in a typical tense affair yet the contest was rarely less than gripping as both sides tussled to give the attendance full value. Ballygarvan went all out to rescue a game that appeared to be slipping away from them and came within a single score of Kanturk into the closing quarter. But just as it appeared that the momentum might switch to Ballygarvan, Kanturk discovered a new lease of life on the run in and three points without reply sealed the deal. At the full time whistle, the relief was tangible for Kanturk on maintaining their ranking for 2010 while a brave Ballygarvan face a last chance saloon against Delaneys. The loser from that confrontation faces the drop to junior level. At the outset, there wasn't any real pattern to the game yet both sides offered plenty of commitment. Ballygarvan points to Alan Murphy and Cian Ó Conchúir sandwiched likewise points to Kanturk's Aidan Walsh and Anthony Nash. Kanturk proceeded to receive a vital shot in the arm on William Murphy placing Billy O'Keeffe to find the net. That score lifted Kanturk's game no end, the ploy of playing Nash at midfield worked a treat in the opening half, Nash commanding plenty of support from the McLoughlins, Dave Riordan and John Healy. Nash pointed magnificently on the double as did Lorcán McLoughlin from a free to forge Kanturk ahead 1-5 to 0-3. Ballygarvan threatened a revival and though faulty shooting limited progress, Mark Kennefick emerged unerring from frees. However, Ballygarvan incurred a further jolt, conceding a second goal, Kanturk's Murphy and Healy liased for Martin O'Riordan to shoot home from close range and Kanturk enjoyed a promising start to the second half, McLoughlin and Healy on target. Ballygarvan picked up the tempo and pieced their game together, a pair of Kennefick points matched by Garry White and substitute Tom Quilligan. However, the deal appeared to be closed for Ballygarvan on 43 minutes, a long range free from Nash took a deflection off a Ballygarvan defender into the net. However, Ballygarvan were far from a spent force. Under the leadership of Cork footballer Ger Spillane, Ballygarvan rallied surperbly, Derry and Ciaran O'Sullivan along with Joe Spillane and Quilligan effective operators. And Ballygarvan were right back in the hunt once Matthew O'Riordan pounced for a goal. Quilligan answered points from Walsh and McLoughlin to ensure the game remained in the melting pot. Though Ballygarvan laid siege to their opponents goal, the Kanturk defence stood resolute particularly Kieran and Eoghan O'Connor with John McLoughin and Kevin Smith offering steady assistance. But any lingering doubt on the outcome was firmly dispelled in the closing minutes, McLoughlin, Brendan Mullane and Donough Duane nailing down all important points before a relieved Kanturk heard the full-time whistle. - John Tarrant Please note the change of venue.   Castletownroche is about 5 miles beyond Ballyhooly v kanturk 076 v kanturk 072 v kanturk 053 v kanturk 003 v kanturk 026 v kanturk 026 v kanturk 030 v kanturk 031 v kanturk 042
