Junior A Football Championship: Ballygarvan 1-13 Ballymartle 1-06
Ballygarvan 1-13 Ballymartle 1-06
29th June 2010
Ballygarvan had an excellent win over Ballymartle in round 4 of the Eagle Star Life Junior A South East Football Championship. The teams had already met in round 1 where Ballymartle emerged victorious.
Ballygarvan started brightly with two points from Gary White. It took until the 14th minute for Ballymartle to register their first point. With both teams exchanging points, the teams were level at 4 points each with 23 minutes gone after a point from Ballymartle’s Eamon Kelly. Ballygarvan went into the lead again after Gary White converted two frees, one from a difficult angle on the 13 after a foul on Mark Kennefick and the second almost directly in front of goal after Ger Spillane was stopped in his tracks. Joe Spillane added two extra points from play, to give Ballygarvan a lead of 0-08 to 0-04 at half-time.
After the break Ballygarvan were quick off the mark again with points from Damien O’ Sullivan and Jonathan O’ Sullivan. With a six point lead, it looked somewhat ominous for Ballymartle. To their credit, Ballymartle battled hard, giving the Ballygarvan defence plenty to do. Eamon Kelly’s outstanding goal was much deserved after their tireless efforts to reduce Ballygarvan’s lead. Grant O’ Brien followed with 1 more point and things looked shaky at 0-10 to 1-05. Ballygarvan weren’t going to give up without a fight! Ger Spillane had as expected, been excellent at centre back all evening. Plenty has been seen of his surging runs forward as well before this match for both Ballygarvan and Cork. Last night’s run yielded a pretty spectacular result, when he kicked for what seemed like for a point, but it dropped as it was heading towards closer to goal, into the top left hand corner. Outstanding! His brother Joe wasn’t so fortunate with being denied twice by the upright in the second half. Grant O’ Brien got a further point for Ballymartle, but Ballygarvan never eased up and the final score of 1-13 to 1-06 was a fair reflection in the difference between the sides on the night.
Ballygarvan now face Shamrocks in the semi final. The date and venue for this game is to be confirmed. Kinsale play Tracton in the other semi final.
